Hello! Between 2nd and 6th June 2011, I cycled 233 miles from Newcastle to Edinburgh, together with a bunch of other crazy women. Some are friends from school, some I had not even meet previously. We were in it for fun, fitness, and fundraising.
I published an online diary of my preparations and progress on the actual journey, and am gradually adding more detail now.
We more or less followed the Sustrans National Route 1 (Newcastle to Edinburgh via Berwick and Melrose), in the following stages:
- Day 1:Newcastle to Whitley Bay (mile 15)
A flat afternoon cycle along the Tyne following the smell of the seaside - Day 2: Whitley Bay to Ellingham (near Preston - mile 68)
Another flat day following the coast. - Day 3: Berwick Hostel (mile 100)
Easy peasy day ("no hills, just bumps" I'm told), with opportunities for sightseeing (Bamburgh Castle, Lindesfarne). - Day 4:Innerleithen (mile 163)
Flat from Berwick to there along the Tweed Valley. - Day 5: Edinburgh Waverley (mile 200)
The one real hill on the whole journey, apparently, is between Innerleithen and Edinburgh (Moorfoot Hills).
